Solo exhibition of artist Juris Petraškevičs “Noberzumi” | Jurmala Museum

  • 4.March - 19.April
  • Jurmala Museum
  • Tirgoņu iela 29

Just like in nature, where the earth is hilly, cracked or scarred, the variations and textures of artist Juris Petraškevičs’ drawings are revealed on their surface. French poet Paul Valéry wrote that “the deepest thing in a person is the skin”, because everything that is truly alive and real in a person happens exactly where he comes into contact with the world, namely on the skin. Similarly, Petraškevičs’s artworks are the boundary between himself and the world, the place of all sensory experience and the way to perceive both himself and others.

Juris Petraškevičs (b. 1953) studied graphic art, but his creative vision is not tied to one medium or technique. The author's works are characterized by process, continuous search and improvisation. The artist's thinking is also influenced by sound - contemporary music, jazz, the principles of which are echoed in his visual language.

Exhibition curator Roberta Astrast eSound composition authors Anna Petraškeviča, Karin Ester Jacobson (Sweden). Sound design Krista Dintere.

The exhibition is open from March 4 to April 19. Jurmala Museum opening hours: Mon., Tue. - Closed, Tue. - Sun. - 10:00 - 17:00.

Laura Ozola’s Exhibition “Sea of Bananas” | Rainis and Aspazija’s Summer House

  • 9.April - 1.August
  • Rainis and Aspazija's Summer House
  • Pliekšāna iela 5/7

The exhibition offers an ironic and multi-layered perspective on an everyday object—the banana—which, in the artist’s works, transforms into a visually rich, symbol-laden landscape. The main exhibition features her latest works, in which the artist continues her characteristic layering of images and symbols.

Alongside the banana motif, other symbols of visual culture also appear—shoes, fabric patterns, references to icons of modernism, pop culture figures, and human figures. These elements create spaces that are at times slightly absurd and ironic, where personal experience intertwines with collective cultural symbols.

Exhibition “A Doctor in a Resort in the 19th Century” | Jurmala Museum

Exhibition “A Doctor in a Resort in the 19th Century” | Jurmala Museum

  • 11.December - 24.May
  • Jūrmala Museum
  • Tirgoņu iela 29

From December 11 to May 24, the Jurmala Museum will host the exhibition “A Doctor in a Resort in the 19th Century”, which reveals an era when medicine and society experienced rapid changes and resorts became an important part of the lifestyle.

The 19th century was a time of industrial revolution and scientific development in the world, which introduced new treatment methods, instruments and educational reforms. It was during this period that the understanding of hygiene, disease prevention and health improvement was strengthened in society.

During this time, a new profession also emerged – a spa doctor, which is closely related to the development of spas. The word “resort” came to the Latvian language from German, and at the beginning of the 19th century, resorts became an integral part of public health and lifestyle. In Latvia, the most important spas were Ķemeri and the Riga seaside, where the first swimming facilities were opened and medical practice began. Development was facilitated by improvements in transport – boat traffic and later also the railway line, which significantly increased the number of holidaymakers.

The exhibition also draws attention to the change in social habits, which in the 19th century became the basis of health culture. Regular hand and face washing, oral hygiene and the use of various water procedures became the daily norm. Water healing was especially popular, which was widely popularized by the German clergyman Sebastian Kneipp, who developed a course of treatment that was used both in resorts and at home.

The exhibition features items from the collection of the Jurmala Museum, as well as from the Bauska Museum, Daugavpils Museum of Local Lore and Art, the Latvian National History Museum, the Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine, the Riga Art Nouveau Centre, the Riga History and Shipping Museum, as well as from the private collections of Daiņš Sīļs and Artis Ērglis. The author and curator of the exhibition is Mārtiņš Vesperis, the artist is Ieva Lapiņa.

Free entrance.

Jūrmala Museum opening hours: Mon., Tue. – Closed, Tue. – Sun. – 10:00 – 18:00.
