Kaugurciems Heritage Story Trail

Kaugurciems is one of the oldest and most historically rich neighbourhoods in Jūrmala. This ancient fishing village, now tucked behind the 1970s residential development of Kauguri along the seashore, preserves remarkable stories reaching back as far as eight centuries.

Behind its modest coastal houses and winding streets lie fascinating chapters of history: the old Riga–Courland–Prussia trade route once passed through the village; the Dukes of Courland established a harbour here; battles of the Latvian War of Independence unfolded in the surrounding forests; and throughout it all, the steady rhythm of coastal fishing life endured. This unique interplay of trade, warfare and everyday maritime life allowed Kaugurciems to become one of the earliest resort areas in Jūrmala.

The audio guide “Kaugurciema stāstu taka” (Kaugurciems Story Trail) is available on the IZI Travel platform. By downloading the app, you can follow an approximately 4 km walking route along a single street, taking up to 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. The trail is complemented by an interactive environmental installation at the intersection of Kaugurciems Street and Zvārtas Street, where visitors can explore characteristic coastal fish species in life-size form and read short descriptions created in collaboration with the coastal knowledge platform piekrasteszivis.lv.

The historical narrative of the trail has been compiled by historian Inga Sarma, who has researched the village for many years. Along the way, you will be guided by the voice of actor Rihards Zeļezņevs, introducing the key stopping points – narrative nodes woven into a unified storytelling network.

Embark on an engaging journey and discover the layered history of this ancient coastal village.
