New! Wooden Architecture Guide of Jūrmala

A new guide now available on VisitJurmala.lv invites visitors to explore the unique wooden architectural heritage of Jūrmala. Created in cooperation with the Jūrmala Cultural Space and Environmental Design Centre, the guide offers insight into one of Latvia’s finest examples of historical wooden architecture – the distinctive urban fabric that emerged during the resort town’s development, shaped by Latvian, Baltic German, and other European architects. This wooden architecture guide is a valuable resource for anyone interested in architectural history, cultural heritage, and sustainable travel.
The route covers five neighbourhoods in Jūrmala and is designed as a leisurely walk through scenic urban landscapes. Along the way, visitors will encounter architecture characteristic of its time – ranging from modest summer cottages to ornate wooden villas in Classicist, Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, and National Romantic styles.
-
Vaivari, Asari, Melluži – the route follows the picturesque Kāpu Street, where historic Art Nouveau boarding houses and summer villas line the coastal dunes, forming a streetscape typical of Jūrmala’s seaside charm;
-
Vecdubulti, Dubulti – in quiet, winding streets, romantic wooden cottages surprise with their eclectic details, revealing a blend of styles and periods;
-
Majori – Jūras Street becomes an elegant axis of wooden architecture, with villas notable for refined craftsmanship and representative ambition;
-
Dzintari – National Romantic villas on Edinburgas and Dzintaru Prospekts embody the ideals and refined lifestyle of their era;
-
Bulduri, Lielupe – here, the diversity of architectural expression is especially vivid – from the ornate façades of Bulduru Prospekts to expressive, vertically accentuated verandas in tower form along Meža Prospekts.
The Wooden Architecture Guide is more than just a walking route – it is an invitation to understand Jūrmala’s identity through its architectural legacy. It enriches the city’s offer as a cultural heritage destination and a model for sustainable tourism.
