Just like in nature, where the earth is hilly, cracked or scarred, the variations and textures of artist Juris Petraškevičs’ drawings are revealed on their surface. French poet Paul Valéry wrote that “the deepest thing in a person is the skin”, because everything that is truly alive and real in a person happens exactly where he comes into contact with the world, namely on the skin. Similarly, Petraškevičs’s artworks are the boundary between himself and the world, the place of all sensory experience and the way to perceive both himself and others.

Juris Petraškevičs (b. 1953) studied graphic art, but his creative vision is not tied to one medium or technique. The author's works are characterized by process, continuous search and improvisation. The artist's thinking is also influenced by sound - contemporary music, jazz, the principles of which are echoed in his visual language.

Every Sunday at 12.00 from Jūrmala Tourist Information Center (Lienes iela 5, Majori) there is an opportunity to join an excursion around the center of Jurmala. “Abysskiss” is a fun pocket orchestra based on unusual instrumentation, one of the most unusual groups to have recently appeared on the French jazz scene.

The quartet is led by saxophonist Camille Maussion and guitarist Pierre Téreygeol. Both musicians are also composers. The two leaders are joined on this dreamy journey by Victor Aufray (euphonium, flugelhorn, voice) and Illya Amar (vibraphone).

Together they create music that is both very deep and airy, without stylistic barriers. It is a masterful music, in which jazz music gives preference to songs, folk music and contemporary music, and in which improvisation has its place.

The concert is organized in cooperation with the French Institute in Latvia.

Alongside Jūrmala’s folk dance groups and folklore ensembles, audiences will enjoy a performance by the Latgalian post-folk group Rikši — one of the most recognisable acts of its kind in Latvia. Their sound blends accordion, violin, bass guitar, mandolin, and drums, creating an energetic and contemporary interpretation of Latvian folk traditions with a distinctive Latgalian spirit.

In the Fisherman’s Farmstead, visitors will be able to take part in a birdhouse-making workshop led by ornithologist Valdis Zariņš — particularly relevant in early spring, when birds return and require nesting sites. A ceramics workshop with artist Alda Bitlāce will introduce participants to whistles inspired by traditional forms, reflecting characteristic features of Vidzeme ceramics. The programme will also include egg decorating, traditional Easter swinging, a poultry exhibition, and an exhibition of works by students of the Jūrmala Art School. The highlight will be a symbolic “awakening of birds” ritual with the folklore group Dvīga.

Every Sunday at 12.00 from Jūrmala Tourist Information Center (Lienes iela 5, Majori) there is an opportunity to join an excursion around the center of Jurmala.  The 44th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition for Young Opera Singers Baltic Region Selection Round, which traditionally features young singers from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
The selection round of the competition is open to anyone interested for free.
The selection rounds of the competition in Europe, Canada and the United States take place from February to the end of May this year, while the final of the competition returns to Jūrmala in 2026, at the Dzintari Concert Hall, where young opera soloists from more than 50 countries will gather from June 2 to 7.
