A Rainy Day in Jūrmala: Places and Experiences When the Resort Slows Down
Rain is not an accidental interruption to summer in Jūrmala. Showers belong to the coastal climate just as naturally as sunshine and wind. In fact, according to long-term climate data, July has the highest rainfall. A rainy day in Jūrmala is therefore not a lost day at the seaside, but an opportunity to see the city from a different perspective — with a darkened sea, rain-soaked pine trees, dramatic skies and the lively summer resort briefly settling into a quieter rhythm.
Nature’s Theatre by Dubulti Station
One of the most impressive places to observe the changing weather is Dubulti railway station. Its wave-shaped concrete canopy offers shelter from the rain while opening onto a broad view across the sweeping curve of the River Lielupe and the meadows along its banks.
Rain clouds move slowly across the landscape, the river gradually darkens to an almost leaden shade, and the sky sinks lower until it seems to merge with the land. The station’s architecture frames the panorama, creating a natural viewing platform from which to watch the wind ripple across the meadows and each shift of light transform the scenery like a living painting.
Gastronomic Stops for a Rainy Day
When dark clouds gather above the sea, the carefree rhythm of the resort briefly slows. The beach empties, the city promenades grow peaceful, and Jūrmala takes on an almost cinematic atmosphere.
It is worth remaining close to the landscape while staying protected from the weather – perhaps at one of Jūrmala’s restaurants or cafés. Panoramic windows and covered terraces allow visitors to watch the sea grow darker, the sky seemingly merge with the earth and the horizon disappear into a grey haze. Such views can be enjoyed at “Light House Jūrmala”, “36. Line Grill Restaurant” and “AMBER VIEW Restaurant – Seafood & Grill”.
The atmosphere by the River Lielupe is different. Located directly on the riverbank, the restaurant “Laivas” offers a close connection with the waterside landscape even on a rainy day. Guests can watch the darkened river and the shifting light above it while enjoying a meal in a warm, tranquil interior.
The charm of a rainy day can also be experienced at cafés and restaurants further into the city. In Majori, the expansive windows of “House of Light” overlook Jomas Street, Jūrmala’s main pedestrian promenade. At “Veranda” and the gastropub “Vasarnīca”, visitors can watch the rain soften the bustle of Jomas Street as fewer passers-by drift past the windows.
Outside, the city slows for a while; inside, the atmosphere is warm and unhurried — an ideal setting for a longer meal, a conversation and views that might pass unnoticed on a sunny day. More restaurants and cafés in Jūrmala can be found in the Eat and Drink section.
Jūrmala’s Cultural Destinations
A rainy day is an excellent opportunity to explore Jūrmala’s art galleries, museums and cultural venues. The city’s exhibition spaces present contemporary art alongside displays that illuminate the history of the resort and the stories of notable personalities connected with it.
These cultural venues are housed in historic wooden buildings, examples of late-20th-century architecture and one of Latvia’s most distinctive works of post-war modernism – Art Station Dubulti.
Jūrmala’s exhibition halls offer a varied programme in which works by local artists and exhibitions devoted to the history of the resort are occasionally complemented by larger-scale artistic projects. The current programme can be found in the article What is happening in Jūrmala’s exhibition halls?
SPA Experiences and Resort Rituals
Rain is also a good reason to focus on rest and wellbeing. Jūrmala offers an extensive range of SPA experiences, while four of the resort’s largest SPA hotels – “Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA”, “Hotel Jūrmala Spa”, “Lielupe by Semarah Hotels” and “Kurshi Hotel & Spa” — offer signature treatments that have become trusted favourites to which guests return time and again.
Alongside classic massages, the treatments include seasonal rituals featuring lavender, linden blossom and the warmth of amber, a collection of Latvian-inspired rituals, herbal poultice massage and hot basalt-stone therapy.
The selection is complemented by authentic sauna ceremonies using sapropel mud, honey and natural scrubs, as well as cosmetics made with therapeutic Ķemeri mud. These treatments continue Jūrmala’s long-standing resort and wellness traditions in a contemporary form. Discover the most popular treatments offered at four of Jūrmala’s leading SPA hotels here.
Cinema, Bowling and Water Adventures for Families
A rainy day in Jūrmala is also an ideal time to enjoy a film. Located in the “Korso” gallery, “StarCinema” has two screening rooms with high-quality sound and visuals, comfortable seating and a distinctive interior. The cinema shows the latest films and also offers private screenings, allowing guests to select a film from its multimedia library.
For a more energetic indoor activity, “The Bowling Club Jūrmala” combines bowling with music, dancing and themed events, turning a rainy evening into lively entertainment for families or groups of friends.
“Līvu Akvaparks”, meanwhile, offers several styles of recreation under one roof – from a wave pool and family-friendly areas with shallow pools, slides and fountains to faster and more adventurous water attractions for thrill-seekers.
Rain in Jūrmala is not an obstacle, but a different kind of atmosphere – inviting visitors to experience dramatic natural scenery, unhurried meals, art and culture, SPA rituals, cinema and active indoor recreation.
