Exhibition “Women’s Companion – Handbag” | Aspazija House
28.May - 19.September

Exhibition “Women’s Companion – Handbag” | Aspazija House

  • 28.May - 19.September
  • Z. Meierovica prosp. 18/20

The Jūrmala Museum branch in Aspazija House is hosting a magnificent and diverse exhibition “Women’s Companion – Handbag”, which will reveal how at different times this accessory has been not only a practical necessity, but also a vivid messenger of personality and the style of its era. As the French fashion designer Christian Dior (1905 – 1957) once said: “A woman’s handbag is her personal history, dressed in leather or silk.”

Initially, a handbag was an item used at high society balls and social events. It became an indispensable everyday accessory for women in the second half of the 19th century, when representatives of other social classes gradually began to wear it as well.

The handbags on display at the exhibition represent the period from the 1880s to the Second World War. They are made of a variety of materials – silk, leather, silver, metal and others.

The exhibition exhibits handbags and accessories from the collections of 12 Latvian museums and 27 private individuals. Also on display are handbags that once belonged to prominent Latvian cultural figures – actresses Elvīra Bramberga, Dace Akmentiņa and Emīlija Bērziņa, opera singer Elfīda Pakule, as well as writer Anna Brigadere.

The author and curator of the exhibition is Mārtiņš Vesperis, a researcher at the Jurmala Museum, and the artist is Ieva Lapiņa.

The exhibition runs from May 28 to September 19.

“Aspazija House” opening hours – Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 – 18:00; Sunday 11:00 – 16:00; Monday – closed.

Gļebs Panteļejevs | MONUMENTS | Dubulti Art Station
12.June - 2.September

Gļebs Panteļejevs | MONUMENTS | Dubulti Art Station

Gļebs Panteļejevs: “Monuments” (12 June–2 September)

A solo exhibition by Latvian sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs, exploring themes of freedom, moral values, and individual responsibility. One of the leading figures in contemporary and monumental sculpture in Latvia, Panteļejevs is known for works that honor human achievement, historical memory, and principles of social importance.

In Monuments, the artist reflects on the mobility of the soul and the fragility of freedom in an age when individuals can become participants in their own unfreedom. Panteļejevs’s sculpture is distinguished by classical mastery of form, a modernist sense of abstraction, and an ability to transform monumental subjects into deeply personal and emotionally resonant experiences.

Open-Air Exhibition “Dzintari Concert Hall – 90” in the Square by Dzintari Concert Hall

Open-Air Exhibition “Dzintari Concert Hall – 90” in the Square by Dzintari Concert Hall

  • 2.July - 31.October
  • In the Square by Dzintari Concert Hall
  • Turaidas 1

Until 31 October, the square by Dzintari Concert Hall hosts the open-air exhibition “Dzintari Concert Hall – 90”, tracing the venue’s development over more than a century – from the entertainment garden of the Edinburgh Kurhaus, with its balls, operettas and variety performances, to a major centre of symphonic music. The exhibition also follows the architectural evolution of the concert hall: the historic hall built in 1936, featuring wall paintings by Ansis Cīrulis, the modernist summer concert hall opened in 1960, and the additions introduced in the 21st century. Historical photographs and documentary materials reveal Dzintari as a place where resort culture, music and architecture have together shaped one of Latvia’s most recognisable cultural landmarks.

Kaspars Migla's photo exhibition “A Walk in Beautiful Jūrmala” | Jūrmala Cultural Center
3.July - 7.September

Kaspars Migla's photo exhibition “A Walk in Beautiful Jūrmala” | Jūrmala Cultural Center

The Jūrmala shown in the exhibition is a resort town of the 1920s–1940s — lively, elegant and diverse.

Jūrmala has always been more than just a city by the sea. It is a place where nature, architecture, recreation and people's desire to stop for a moment meet — to breathe in the pine air, go to the beach, walk along parks, streets and courtyards hidden in the shade of wooden summer houses.

The photographs reveal beach promenades, swimming pools, sanatoriums, stations, cafes, concert gardens, boat piers, Ķemeri Parks, the bustle of Jomas Street and quieter moments among the pine trees. Some of these places have survived, some have changed, but the special feeling of Jūrmala is still recognizable.

The aim of the exhibition is to invite the viewer not only to look at old photographs from the book “A Walk Through Beautiful Jūrmala”, but to take a walk through time. Using the augmented reality app “Old Jurmala”, you can see how the past meets the present — the historical image becomes a starting point from which you can see what the same place looks like today, or enjoy historical videos.

Beautiful Jūrmala is not just a memory of the past. It is a city that continues to change, preserving its resort spirit, architectural richness and the presence of nature. This exhibition invites you to take a closer look — at the buildings, streets, people, sea and light — and see that Jūrmala was beautiful then and is beautiful now.

Entrance to the exhibition is free.

Opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday from 12:00 to 15:00. 18:00, closed on Sundays, Mondays.

The exhibition is on view until September 7.

Both exhibitions turn towards the human inner world, personal symbols and art’s ability to reveal deeper layers of consciousness. In “FETISH AS ART”, Helēna Heinrihsone explores the fetish as an object, image or symbol created by the individual and gradually charged with special meaning; lipstick, perfume, roses and the contours of the female body become central elements in both minimal and more expanded compositions. Gustavs Filipsons’s works created for “VISITORS” reveal the artist’s search within his inner world – each piece is conceived as an independent message, sign or marker on a path of personal growth.
